BREAST CANCER FACTS

The Breast Cancer Campaign was created to raise awareness and educate people about Breast Cancer and its impact on women (and men) in Aotearoa. It's the most common cancer for Kiwi Women, and the 3rd most common cancer overall. Most women who develop Breast Cancer have no relatives with the disease. Young women and men can also get it. More than 650 women die of the disease every year in Aotearoa.

AGE RISKS

The chance of developing Breast Cancer increases with age. About 70% of Breast Cancers are diagnosed in women over 50 years old. It's less common in women under the age of 40, but women in their 20s and 30s can get it too.

INCREASED RATES

The increased rates of Breast Cancer may be due to an ageing population (simply getting older increases the risk for most cancers), lifestyle factors such as increased alcohol consumption and the rise of obesity rate, having children at an older change, having fewer children, and a reduction in breastfeeding rate.
